On painting, embodied perception and the spaces we hold within

Brea Freeburn (b. 2000, Newry, Northern Ireland) is a painter based in the UK. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2026, having previously completed a First-Class Honours degree in Fine Art Painting at Ulster University. Her practice explores embodied perception, refuge and quiet presence, working with paint, relief and layered surface to create forms that hold emotional and physical trace.

Through a process of accumulation, carving and layering, Freeburn creates paintings that sit between figuration and abstraction. Her work considers the body as both subject and site, where memory, sensation and environment converge. Recurring organic structures and soft atmospheric fields evoke containment without closure, suggesting spaces of protection, transformation and return.
