Renée Estée Wins the 2026 MA Art Prize with a Work About Change and Waiting

Australian painter Renée Estée has been named the winner of the 2026 MA Art Prize, a prestigious award dedicated to supporting emerging talent in contemporary Australian art. Now in its fourth edition, the acquisitive prize is valued at AUD $25,000 and continues its mission of supporting artists during the early stages of their professional careers.

At the centre of Estée’s victory is Empty Nest (we all wait for someone), a large-scale diptych measuring approximately three metres in length. The work will be presented by COMA gallery during Sydney Contemporary 2026, scheduled to take place at Carriageworks from 3 to 6 September.

The painting explores universal themes such as separation, desire, absence, and the transformations that accompany different stages of life. Within the composition, human figures appear to move, wait, and search for one another across a space dominated by an intense yellow field. Nests, eggs, and the presence of a solitary bird become symbolic elements that evoke protection, vulnerability, and possibility at the same time.

Estée’s painting develops a visual language that moves between figuration and abstract gesture. A restrained palette, primarily dominated by red, blue, and yellow, is combined with energetic brushstrokes, drips, and marks deliberately left open to chance. The result is a vibrant surface where the artist’s control coexists with the unpredictability of the painting process.

Born in Australia and working between Melbourne and New York, Renée Estée has developed an artistic practice that explores the rituals people use to navigate moments of transition: celebration, grief, memory, and waiting. This focus on both personal and collective change has made the selection of her winning work particularly meaningful.

For the artist, the recognition also comes at an important moment in her career. After spending several years away from Australia, the award represents, in many ways, a symbolic return to the artistic scene of her home country.

The jury for the 2026 MA Art Prize selected Estée from a shortlist of five finalists, recognising the strength of her visual research and her ability to develop a distinctive, ambitious, and highly personal approach to painting. The other finalists included Alex Walker, Binygurr Wirrpanda, Jackson Farley, and Rebecca Diele.

Established by MA Financial Group, the prize was created to support emerging artists and is closely connected to Sydney Contemporary, one of Australia’s leading contemporary art fairs. Over the years, the award has helped bring attention to artists at significant stages in their professional development.

The 2026 edition also marks an important milestone for the prize, both because of its increased financial value and the record number of applications received. Renée Estée’s victory confirms the increasingly important role of emerging painting within the Australian and international contemporary art scene.

With Empty Nest (we all wait for someone), Estée transforms an apparently simple image, the empty nest, into a broader reflection on what we lose, what we wait for, and what, despite everything, continues to emerge.
